BOOSTER CLUB MEETING - Monday OCTOBER 6th
Special Guest Speaker:
Joe Garagiola
6:45 p.m. - NDP cafeteria

Joe Garagiola, a member of the broadcasters’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame has combined insight and humor over five decades of baseball broadcasting, including nearly 25 years on the Saturday Game of the Week telecasts on NBC. In addition, Garagiola spent 11 years as a co-host on NBC’s “Today” show, as well serving as host of a number of popular game shows.

Garagiola’s broadcasting career began shortly after his playing career ended. He broke into the major leagues in 1946 as a catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, and contributed four hits in Game 4 of the 1946 World Series, won by the Cardinals in six games. Joe also played with the Chicago Cubs, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates. Upon retirement in 1954, Garagiola was offered a position on the Cardinals’ broadcast team, working with fellow Hall of Famers Harry Caray and Jack Buck. Garagiola would eventually move to the television booth with the New York Yankees, working with the initial co-winner of the Ford C. Frick award, Red Barber. At NBC, Garagiola shared the booth with two more Cooperstown enshrinees, Curt Gowdy and Vin Scully.

A Valley resident, Garagiola has been extremely active in the community and was honored as the 1998 recipient of the Children’s MVP Award presented by the Jim Eisenreich Foundation. The award goes to a former player who has made significant contributions to children’s causes. He works tirelessly for the Baseball Assistance Team, and is very visible at major league spring training camps, educating players on the evils of spit tobacco.

Garagiola was honored in November, 2001 by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce for his work in the community, which includes his efforts on behalf of the St. Peter’s Indian Mission in the Gila River Indian Community. Nicknamed "Awesome Fox" by the staff of St. Peter's, the baseball field at St. Peter's School is named "Awesome Fox Field" in his honor.

Garagiola is the author of several baseball books, including the newly released "Just Play Ball," with the forward written by his lifelong friend, Yogi Berra.

Notre Dame Varsity Football - Saints 45, Washington 0

The Saints took their act on the road Friday night, taking care of business in their first region contest by shutting out the Washington Rams by a score of 45 to 0. This was the first time that NDP defeated Washington in our short history of varsity football. Senior Andy Wilder was one of many standouts with two interceptions (one for a TD), one receiving touchdown, six extra points, a field goal and 6 touchbacks. Once again, the Saint’s defense was dominant, holding the state’s leading receiver to two catches for 25 yards. The Saints defenders combined to hold the Rams to 110 yards of total offense. Seventy of those yards came on the Ram’s final drive of the game. On the offensive side of the ball, the offensive line physically dominated Washington’s defense, helping a quartet of running backs rush for nearly two hundred yards. The Saints will find themselves on the road again next week as they will look to push their region record to 2-0 versus a very tough Moon Valley team.

Notre Dame Junior Varsity Football - Saints 28, Washington 8

The Saints Junior Varsity Football team remain undefeated with a victory over Washington and a final score of 28 - 8. Notre Dame was first with points on the board when Brett Barry ran for a TD in the first quarter. Brian Poupore scored a TD off a reception in the second quarter ending the first half with a score of 14-8. The third quarter brought up Kodey Jones who scored a TD off a quarterback sneak. Brett Barry found the end zone again in the fourth quarter and Barnaby Audsley was perfect on all four extra point attempts giving the Saints a final score of 28-8. Our next game is home against Moon Valley on Thursday at 6pm. See link under Varsity for a map to Moon Valley High School.

Notre Dame Freshman Football - Saints 34, Washington 7

The Freshman Saints looked sharp in a 34-7 win over Washington on Wednesday. NDP drew first blood grinding out a sustained drive on the ground with Greg Hopkins finding the end zone on a four yard run. Avery Korth converted the point after to give NDP a 7-0 lead as the first quarter came to close. In the second quarter, after a penalty and two incomplete pass attempts the Saint’s staff faced a fourth and fifteen decision. Coach Bohn’s confidence in quarterback Jordon Gehrke paid off when he connected with Calvin Martin for the TD. Another successful Korth PAT and NDP closed out the half with a 14-0 lead. With the offense now fully on track, NDP tallied another six points in the third quarter on a Gehrke pass to Daniel Ziemann. After a great NDP defensive stance, the Saints offense opened the fourth quarter with a balanced drive punctuated by Gehrke’s one yard plunge into the end zone. Korth drove the kick through the uprights and lead was stretched to 27. Keeping the pressure on, the defense forced a fumble and Spencer Riley fell on the ball to give the offense great field position for their final drive of the night. Stratton Williams, returning from an arm injury, scampered seven yards for a TD followed by a Brandon Senior PAT which pushed the score to 34 -0. With 4:14 left in the game, the Rams managed to find the end zone resulting in a final score of Saints 34, Washington 7.

Notre Dame POM

The POM athlete for September is Brooke Morris, a senior and 2 year veteran on Varsity Pom. Brooke helped teach two sideline dances this past month and demonstrated leadership and patience towards the newer dancers. Great job Brooke ! We are so proud of you!

For the regional and state competition POM routines, the dancers have been working diligently with award-winning L.A. choreographer Aimee Martinez, a former 3-year L.A. Laker Dancer veteran and University of Kansas dancer.

Notre Dame Cheer Performs Community Service

Our girls did a Community Service project for HopeKids this past Saturday. HopeKids is a foundation which creates fun activities for children with cancer and other life threatening diseases. It gives the kids something to look forward to on their calendars on a ongoing basis.

This event was held at McCormick Ralilroad Park. Our girls performed for the crowd and took kids who wanted to participate in a clinic aside to teach them some cheers. Some of our girls even dressed up in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs outfits to entertain the crowd. This was one of the biggest hits of the day. Everyone was thrilled with the interaction of our girls. The cheerleaders created many smiles on the children’s faces that day. It was a great team bonding experience.

On a Football note, our Varsity team is now 5 and O. It doesn’t get any better than that! Our school needs to rally up some support and head out to the games though. You don’t have to have a child on the team in order to sit in the stands to support them. The games are a fun and exciting way to spend your Friday nights for Varsity, Thursday nights for JV, and Wednesday nights for Freshman.

So come on out, whether home or away, and show that we LOVE our team and want to cheer them on to victory!

Volleyball player recovering from rare disorder

AZ CENTRAL-9/30

Blaire Buckley is patient and determined, resilient and brave.

The adjectives go on and on.

She may not be able to hoist her arm up and swing to serve, but her impact is felt among her Notre Dame Prep volleyball teammates.

Just being at every meeting, every match, every function, working with a physical therapist in an attempt to return back to normal function on the court again, inspires those around her.....

Notre Dame Cheer Performs at 8th Grade Day

It was 8th grade day at school on Friday. At the pep rally, the cheer team performed their new competition routine for the 8th graders. It was a huge hit with the crowd.

That night at the football game, our favorite little cheerleader, Hayley Elliot, cheered with our girls again. She jumps right in the middle of the cheerleaders, gets put up in stunts and really works the crowd. She got a lot of practice on the fight song with our victory over Seton.

We had a great turn out at the game this week. It is good to see a big crowd to support our Saints football team. Don’t forget to come cheer the team on at Washington next Friday! We need lots of fan support to help keep our winning streak going!

The NDP teams spent Saturday working hard on a nine mile run from Hayden and Osborn to Kiwanis Park. After the run the NDP teams scouted the competition at the Doug Conley invitational at Kiwanis Park. On October 1, NDP will be competing against Cortez, Seton Catholic and Desert Edge at Cortez.

Notre Dame Girls Volleyball Dominate

The 2 matches this past week against Flagstaff and Moon Valley made clear to all who watched how dominant our girls are. Though these matches were slow-paced at the start, the Varsity girls stayed on top with serving aces, excellent passing and quick net reflexes. Coming up this week, the Lady Saints take on Washington at home Tuesday then travel to Glendale on Thursday.

Notre Dame Varsity Football - Saints 54, Seton 9

The Bishop’s Cup will remain on the Notre Dame campus for another year as the Saints overcame early adversity to defeat the Seton Sentinels 54-9. Once again, the star of the show was the Saints defense who hurried, sacked and frustrated Seton’s talented quarterback all night. The Saints held an offense that had averaged almost four hundred yards a game to a grand total of 175 yards. The defensive highlight of the night took place when senior Andy Wilder intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Special teams also played an important role as the Saints dominated. Senior Taylor Malenfant returned two punts for scores and Andy Wilder consistently pinned Seton deep in their own territory forcing them to attempt to go 70 to 80 yards on each drive. Offensively, kudos go to seniors Patrick Foley and Andrew Stutz who, with the help of their offensive line, combined to rush for four touchdowns. Next week the Saints play their first game away from the friendly confines of SCC as they travel to Washington High School and attempt to avenge their only loss from last season. See you Friday night at Washington! Go Saints!

Notre Dame Junior Varsity Football - Saints 55, Sinagua 0

The Saints JV football team remain undefeated with a score of 55 - 0. The Saints jumped out fast on the first play of the game with Nick DeValaria returning the kick off for a touchdown. Brian Poupore was next to add to the board when he scored off an interception. Both Kodey and Korey Jones scored before half time making it 27 - 0. The Saints came back on the field with an exuberant amount of energy allowing Korey Jones to score another TD. Next up was Dex Hiland with a fumble recovered in the end zone for a TD. Ben Gassmann stepped up with an interception which he returned for a TD. Garrett Budnick scored the final TD of the game giving the Saints a final score of 55-0. Let's not forget our defense... they have allowed 0 points to be scored by the opponents at our homes games. Our next game is home against Washington on Thursday 10/2 with a start time of 6pm - come cheer on your JV Saints!!

Cheer has taken on a whole new look this year at Notre Dame. Not only are there new faces on the team, but each girl now has a cheer box which is painted to fit their personality. The girls stand on them to see over the players’ heads during the game. The squad is also now using megaphones to get the crowd fired up. The girls are very excited to show off their new look.

Notre Dame Girls Volleyball "Kills" the Competition

Tuesday our girls' volleyball team took control of the match from the beginning and never relinquished it. The 3 Co-captain seniors held up their ends tonight: Cassie Uribe had 12 kills, 8 aces, Jessica Maxwell had 11 kills, 5 aces and Liz Smith had 5 kills, 1 ace. Juniors Haley Madden with 7 kills, 3 aces and setter Steph Svornick with 30 assists, 1 ace didn't let up either.

The NDP girls' volleyball team advanced their record to 4-1 on Wednesday with a solid win over 4th ranked Mingus 3-0. Though they had a slow start, the girls picked it up in the later part of the first game, moved along well with more momentum in the second game and never let go with confident passing and better footwork. Co-captain Cassie Uribe led the field with 18 kills, 8 digs and 1 ace, while co-captain Jessica Maxwell scored 12 kills and 13 digs. Stephanie Svorinic shone with 23 assists and 7 digs, Haley Madden had 8 kills, 10 digs and 1 ace along with Kelly Lafferty's 11 digs.

Notre Dame's girls' varsity volleyball had a great start on Friday in California at the Dave Mohs Orange County Championships winning both of their best out-of-three matches in two straight games. After that great first day however, the Saints lost their footing on Saturday. They learned so many valuable lessons that the opposing teams this upcoming week are the ones who need to be worried. Come on out and support these exciting girls as they take on a seasoned Flagstaff team this Tuesday at home! Their match Thursday is away at Moon Valley.

Notre Dame Varsity Football - Saints 54, Independence 6

The Notre Dame Varsity Football team crushed Glendale Independence on Friday Night by controlling both sides of the ball. Offensively, Taylor Malenfant had a spectacular game with three touchdowns, including one on a 93 yard punt return. Shane Wolfe threw two touchdown, one to Andy Wilder and the second to Malenfant. “We did what we wanted offensively,” said coach Scot Bemis. “Our offensive line really stepped it up and deserves a lot of credit tonight.”

Defensively, the Saints held Indpendence to only 15 yards rushing. Garrett Riggio excelled on defense, making seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries (all team highs), and tackling the Patriots punter on the 1-yard line after a botched snap to set up the Saints’ first touchdown.

The undefeated Saints host 4A-II rival Chandler Seton Catholic next week at Scottsdale Community College.

Notre Dame Junior Varsity Football - Saints 28, Indpendence 0

The Junior Varsity Football Saints soundly trumped Independence High School Thursday night to remain undefeated with a 3-0 record. While the Independence Patriots were a much bigger team, the Saints managed to shut them out 28-0. Brett Berry scored the first touchdown of the night in the first quarter. Michael Lynch intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown in Quarter 2. Brett Barry, again, scored for the Saints in the 3rd quarter. Korey Jones had a 17 yard run in the 4th to make it 28-0. Kicker, Barnaby Audsley, was 4-4 on extra point kicks! It was an impressive effort by all the players.

The next game is a home game Thursday night vs Sinagua at 5:00PM.

Notre Dame Freshman Football - Saints 33, Independence 6

Freshmen Defense Sets the Table as Saints Feast on Independence Turnovers

Showing no ill effects coming off last week’s tough one point loss to Greenway, the Freshman squad improved to 1-1 with a 33-6 win over the Independence Patriots. A solid, disciplined Notre Dame defense never allowed the Patriots to establish a running game and forced three turnovers that led to Saint’s scores.

On just the third play of the game, defensive end Calvin Martin set the tone when he recovered an Independence fumble. Saints quarterback Jordan Gehrke converted the opportunity finding wide receiver Tim Hawes for a 7 yard scoring toss. Later in teh quarter, Gehrke hit receiver Mitch Dwyer in the end zone for a quick six points. Avery Korth split the uprights for the extra point and a 13-0 lead. Defensively, Tyler Mascaro, Michael Foley, Calvin Martin and Josh Roeckner continued their aggressive style of play keeping the Patriots out of the end zone in the first half.

Early in the fourth quarter defensive tackle Michael Foley forced a fumble and the Saints took possession in Pats territory. Quarterback Gerhke went to the air for a third touchdown once again finding Tim Hawes open for the score and a commanding 26 point lead.

Next it was #33 Austin Cooper’s turn to shine when he interceptted an errant Patriot’s pass attempt. Taking over on the 50 yard line, Saints running back Greg Hopkins found a hole and picked his way down the field 50 yards to score. Another Avery Korth kick through the uprights and the lead was 33.

Finally with three minutes left in the game, the Patriots put together a scoring drive. A personal foul by the Saints put Independence on the five yard line where they punched it in to escape the shut out.

Notre Dame Swim and Dive Team

The Notre Dame Swim team continued their domination with the women winning easily against Saguaro 115-71. Freshman Noelle Francios narrowly missed the school record in the 200 free by .09, a record that will surely fall this season. Freshman Alexis Daswick broke the school record in the 100 free by nearly a full second and also broke the 100 backstroke record.

NOTRE DAME VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW

ARIZONA VARSITY-9/19

After two consecutive 5th place finishes at 4A-DII state ('05 & '06), the Notre Dame Prep Saints had a breakthrough season in '07, finishing 20-0 (42-3 overall) and winning the state title. It was the program's first championship, but also meant the loss of several seniors. For Sarah Svorinic (Duquesne), Rebecca Sleggers (Lehigh), and Chelsea Thompson (Providence), it was a great finish to a solid career. So, how will a reloaded NDP, returning eight letter winners, meet the challenges for the 2008 season? Coach Laura Harris thinks her team is ready for the title run.

"The great work ethic of the Lady Saints will be a big factor," says Harris, "in any hopes for success in the upcoming season." Leading Notre Dame will be Cassie Uribe (Sr,OH.5-10) an Arizona Varsity 2nd Team All-State dominant attacker with big jump serve and stats to match: 344K, .403K%, 69Ac, 95D. Jessica Maxwell (Sr,MB,6-0), a great blocker/attacker, who contributed 114K, 58Bl, 36Ac, 178D, returns. Setting is talented, but untested Stephanie Svorinic (Jr,S,5-4), "She has stepped right in and filled the shoes of big sister Sarah," said Harris............

2 take tough paths to success: Ryan Reardon

AZCENTRAL-9/18

......"He came in four weeks into the school year (his freshman year)," Notre Dame head coach Scot Bemis said. "He was a big, overweight kid. I talked to him about coming out for football. He said his nickname was 'The Night Train.'

"We kind of chuckled. At the end of the year, our freshman coach said, 'This Reardon kid will be a good one on JV.' He worked his tail off in the weight room. He's been great. The kids call him 'Boston.' "

That's because Reardon had a thick New England accent when he arrived. It isn't as strong anymore.

His will to be the best he can is strong, fortified by a spirited mother who overcame pancreatic cancer when he was 2.......

Football notes

EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE-9/18

.....After going into the season planning to utilize a two-quarterback system, Scottdale Notre Dame coach Scot Bemis said this week he has decided senior Shane Wolfe will be the full-time starter.

“Shane has really separated himself,” Bemis said. “He’s done a good job making the reads he needs to make. Hopefully that will continue to improve, and we’ll give him more responsibility.”

Wolfe, who split time with junior Will King in the first two games, has completed 14 of 23 attempts for 297 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

“He’s not forcing things and that’s what I’ve been preaching to him all spring and summer,” Bemis said........

3rd-grader makes dream appearance with cheer line

AZCENTRAL-9/16

Hayley Elliot is not your average high school cheerleader.

For starters, she's about 2 feet shorter than the other girls. And, she's only in third grade.

Oh, and less than a year ago, Hayley was bedridden after a bone-marrow transplant to save her life.

But Friday night, Hayley was jumping and yelling alongside the Notre Dame Preparatory cheerleading squad. They made her an honorary cheerleader and booster-club member that night at the Scottsdale-based private school's football game.....
