EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE-11/21

No. 9 Mingus (9-2) vs. No. 1 Notre Dame (11-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: Scottsdale Community College, 9000 E. Chaparral Road

Last meeting: When these teams squared off Dec. 7, 2007, they were the final two standing in 4A Division II. After 2 1/2 back-and-fourth quarters, Notre Dame took control with 21 unanswered points en route a 49-32 victory over Cottonwood Mingus that gave the Saints their first state championship.

Why notre dame will win: Defense, defense, defense. Only one opponent has scored more than 14 points against the Saints this season (Phoenix Greenway, 17). Mingus is averaging 38.2 points per game but struggled against the only stout defense it has faced. The Marauders were limited to 14 points in a home loss to Queen Creek on Sept. 5.

Why Mingus could win: The Marauders know the Saints as well as any of Notre Dame’s region opponents. Tonight’s game marks the teams’ third straight meeting in the playoffs. Mingus coach Bob Young will work that familiarity into his game plan and hope quarterback Tony Vocca (2,290 yards of offense, 27 touchdowns) has at least one more big-game performance in him.

VERDE NEWS-11/21

....Leading Notre Dame this season is quarterback Shane Wolfe. Last year's quarterback, Sean Renfree created a lot of the fireworks that led to the Notre Dame State Title. But he has since graduated and moved on. Wolfe has taken over as quarterback this year and has done a solid job for the team. Wolfe averages close to 117 passing yards per game and has about 1300 passing yards this season with 17 touchdowns and six interceptions.

On the ground, No. 28 Andrew Stutz leads Notre Dame with an average of 107 yards per game, almost 1200 total rushing yards this season with 16 touchdowns. Notre Dame appears to have only a couple of go-to guys on the ground and in the air. Andy Wilder and Taylor Malenfrant are the two receivers Wolfe looks to most of the time. Wilder has averages close to 27-yards per catch with a total of 484 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Malenfrant is the other receiver with 28 catches this season for 460 yards and six touchdowns..........

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO FINAL FOUR BEFORE BOWING OUT AGAINST TOP SEED

Last week your NDP girls' varsity volleyball team started the State Tournament with a victory over Higley (25-13, 25-16, 25-13). They followed that up with another win over Catalina on Thursday (25-19, 25-16, 25-22).

Those victories put the Lady Saints in the semi-final against #1 seed Amphitheatre on Saturday morning. The Saints played hard, but lost, (18-25, 15-25, 15-25). Congratulations on a fine season.

Your girls' volleyball Saints made a great run to get to the semi-finals of the state volleyball tournament Saturday. They played strong on Wednesday taking 13th ranked Higley in three games and solidly on Thursday winning in three against 5th ranked Catalina. Though undefeated and #1 ranked Amphitheater from Tucson proved to be more on top of their game Saturday, we are so proud of our Saints for being semi-finalists! Congratulations to our three seniors for a great season! We wish them good luck and good fortune with their college plans! The Lady Saints would also like to thank all of the great fans, especially the Dawg Pound, who came out to support them all season!!!

FOOTBALL

#1 RANKED NDP DEFEATED SAHAURITA 28-13 on Friday night in the first round of the State Playoffs. We had a nice crowd, but we need to see more people in the stands cheering for the Saints! Make plans now for next Fridays second round game. It should be Friday at SCC. We will forward the details of the second round game early next week. Keep it rolling Saints!

The state playoffs are always considered do or die and the #1 seeded Saints found out Friday that no opponent they play will go without a fight. Tucson Sahuarita provided a wake-up call Friday night, coming to SCC and testing the Saints with great play by their star running back Allonte Singfield. The Saints found themselves trailing at halftime for the first time this season by a score of 13-7. Refocused for the second half, the Saints settled themselves and restored order by playing solid defense and getting their ground game going. After allowing 13 first quarter points, the Saints defense tightened up and managed to shut out Sahuarita for the final three quarters. Offensively, both Andrew Stutz and Patrick Foley rushed for over one hundred yards and combined for three touchdowns. On Friday night the Saints will face the Mingus Maurauders at SCC. We need a huge crowd to root on our Saints and match the intensity of the Cottonwood fans who always show up in great numbers to support their team. See you Friday night at SCC! Go Saints!

Notre Dame Cheer

The 2008 State Champion Cheerleaders are hosting a cheer clinic on December 13th. Anyone from 1st to 8th grade is invited to attend. It will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 in the NDP gymnasium. The clinic will feature cheers, stunting, learning a dance routine, and working on jumps and tumbling. If anyone is interested in participating please email Paula Shaw at HYPERLINK "mailto:twselec@aol.com" twselec@aol.com. She will forward you a sign up form. The cost is $55.00.

The girls competed in the AIA Regional Championship this weekend. This meet is the qualifier for the State Championship. Our five man stunt group placed 2nd out of 13 teams and our team placed 4th out of 15 teams. What an awesome job! Both teams will now go on to compete in the 2009 State Championship on January 17th.

Friday night’s game was a nail biter for the first half, but the Varsity Football Saints pulled it together for another victory. There was great crowd involvement this week. Even the dog pound was full. That’s what we like to see at the games. Let’s all get out there to support out team next week for our game against Mingus.

Notre Dame POM

Congratulations to the Saints Varsity Pom team who defended their regional title yesterday at the AIA Agua Fria Regionals winning back-to-back Regional Championships! The team also qualified for the AIA State Spiritline Championship that will be held on Jan. 17th at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott.

4A-II volley: Notre Dame hits stride

AZCENTRAL-11/14

It's a scary thought when a defending state volleyball champion is just hitting its stride as it enters the state-tournament semifinal round.

But that's what is happening with Class 4A Division II title-holder Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep, which defeated visiting Tucson Catalina 25-19, 25-16 25-22 in a quarterfinal match Thursday night.

"They're coming together and getting a feeling of each other after losing the girls that we lost (to injury)," said Notre Dame coach Laura Harris, whose team plays its semifinal match at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. (All state semifinal matches are played Saturday at Chandler Hamilton.) "The chemistry is really working well." ......

Saints marching to the drum of defense this season

EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE-11/14

Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep’s unstoppable force has been replaced by an immovable object.

The former provided the Saints with their first state title. The latter has put the team in excellent position to win a second straight.

A year after riding the strong arm of quarterback Sean Renfree and its highly potent offense to the 4A Division II championship, Notre Dame (10-0) enters this year’s playoffs as the overwhelming favorite thanks to a defense as stingy as a car salesman.

Opponents have managed just 80 points against the Saints, the sixth fewest in the state according to MaxPreps, but only 35 have been allowed by the first-team defense, a unit coach Scot Bemis said is the most complete he’s ever coached.......

Friday's prep football capsules

EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE-11/14

4A-II

No. 16 Sahuarita (6-4) at No. 1 Notre Dame (10-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: Scottsdale Community College, 9000 E. Chaparral Road

Key matchup: Both teams feature powerful run games. Notre Dame’s Andrew Stutz (1,028 yards, 15 touchdowns) and Patrick Foley (501 yds., 11 TDs) will likely have their way. The play of Sahuarita’s Allonte Singfield (1,622, 20) will determine whether or not this game is over by halftime.

Key stat: The Saints have won their home games by an average score of 44.8-4.2.

The intrigue: Notre Dame has limited seven of 10 opponents to fewer than 10 points this season. Can the Saints bring that total up to eight?.....
